Be Transformed - Pentecost 2026

In the season of Pentecost, we celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit, the birth of the church, and the empowerment of God’s people for the mission of Jesus. Jesus has been raised from the dead. He has ascended to the Father. The Spirit has come, the Great Commission has been given, and the church has been sent to make disciples in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.

This year, we are walking through the liturgical calendar with the theme Be Transformed. The Christian life is one of ongoing formation - the slow, gracious, often hidden work of the Holy Spirit renewing us from the inside out. Pentecost reminds us that this transformation is never merely personal or private. The Spirit forms us into the image of Jesus for the good of others, sending us to bear witness with our lives, words, relationships, resources, and presence.

ALL THINGS NEW

During this season, we are focusing on our All Things New Offering - an opportunity to participate together in God’s renewing work through local and global missions. Together, we will dream, pray, discern, and consider how our collective generosity can make an impact in Coventry, within our three-mile radius, and to the ends of the earth.

This year, our goal is 100% participation from City Church members. That does not mean everyone gives the same amount. It means every member is invited to prayerfully participate. Even if all you can give is one dollar, give it with joy. Generosity is not about pressure or guilt. It is about shared ownership in the mission God has given us and joyful participation in the renewing work of Christ.

For Pentecost, our personal discipline is generosity.

As a spiritual discipline, generosity trains us to live with open hands before God. It reminds us that everything we have belongs to him and that we are stewards, not owners. It loosens our grip on self-protection, greed, and comfort, and opens our eyes to the needs and opportunities around us.

KIDS & FAMILY RESOURCE

Josey Johnson's Hair & the Holy Spirit

by Esau McCaulley

Josey's story can help all children appreciate the fact that even though we may look different, God values us each the same. In fact, our differences are part of God's design. He wants all people to be represented in his kingdom, and Pentecost celebrates God's desire to gather believers from all over the world into his family.

LITURGICAL YEAR

The liturgical calendar follows the life of Christ and, in its cyclical rhythm, invites us to enter the movement of his life on a yearly basis. As we observe each season, we can observe Christ. We pray that as you allow the seasons of the church year and anchor your life to the life of Christ, you’ll discover that a fuller joy and vitality marks your days.

Lesslie Newbign writes, “the business of the Church is to tell and to embody a story, the story of God’s mighty acts in creation and redemption and of God’s promises concerning what will be in the end. The Church affirms the truth of this story by celebrating it, interpreting it, and enacting it in the life of the contemporary world.”

Each Sunday we see the arc of God’s story rehearsed and embodied (God is Holy, We are Broken, Jesus Saves Us, Jesus Sends Us)... but how do we “enact it in the contemporary world” of our homes, where we can create culture and habits that form us.

The church calendar, much like Sunday Service, moves us through a story. Specifically the story of Jesus with his incarnation in Advent all the way through the sending of the church in Pentecost.

  • ADVENT - the future hope of Christ

  • CHRISTMAS - the joyful birth of Christ

  • EPIPHANY - the perfect manifestation of Christ

  • LENT - the temptation and death of Christ

  • EASTER - the world-changing resurrection of Christ

  • PENTECOST - the renewing Spirit of Christ
